The Soldier

I was walking across a field toward a group of trees. My clothing felt oddly heavy and when I looked down I realized that I was a British soldier during the Revolutionary War, with bright red hair. I had fallen in love with an American girl and was going to meet her in the woods, hiding from her parents because I knew they would kill me. I stepped into the woods and heard people moving behind me, so I started running, trying to load my rifle at the same time. The rebel army caught me and took me to a barn, where they beheaded me. I watched as the yellow straw on the barn floor turned dark red slowly from my blood. Then I became myself again, six years old and sitting on my grandfather's lap, holding the book of the soldier's story in my hands. I closed the book because I had just finished reading it. The back cover was solid black, but the front had alternating diagonal stripes of black and purple with a hologram in the center saying "Psycho." I looked at the man who was supposed to be my grandfather, realized he was not, and saw that he had red hair. I looked out the window and saw the same field and barn where the soldier had been executed, the straw in the doorway still stained with blood. --Mary
